There is a very high incidence of orofacial injuries in various sports. In basketball where mouth gaurds are not commonly worn 34% of the injuries are orofacial. Of these orofacial injuries the highest percentage are dentally related. Various degrees of injury from tooth avulsion, to lacerations, contusion, and jaw fractures have been reported. It is estimated by the American Dental Association that mouthguards prevent nearly 200,000.00 injuries on a yearly basis in high school and collegiate football alone.
